Ataxia

Ataxia is a movement disorder caused by problems in the brain. When it occurs it is trouble moving parts of the body the way person wants, or the muscles in your arms and legs might move when it is not suppose to. The word ataxia actually means “without coordination.”

Types of ataxia

  • Cerebellar (brain)
  • Sensory (nerves)
  • Vestibular (ears)

Sign and symptoms

  • Behavior or personality changes
  • Changes in your voice
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Low muscle tone
  • Muscle tremors
  • Slurred speech
  • Trouble walking
  • Wide gait

What we can do to reduce the sign and symptoms of this with the help of physical therapy?

There is two important ways we do rehab for the patient with ataxia : Land and aqua rehab

Land rehab consists of:

Experienced therapists at our centre will help you with the general maintenance of your arms and legs, and prevent your muscles weakening or getting stuck in one position (contractures). Our therapists will also be able to teach you a number of physical exercises you can do every day to help strengthen and stretch your muscles. They may also be able to recommend walking aids to help you get around.

Aqua rehab consists of:

Muscle problems which are being experienced by the person due to ataxia  such as  muscle spasms, cramps and stiffness are taken care by the hydrotherapy it basis act as a  muscle relaxant without any side effect.

Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular dystrophy is a group of disorders characterized by a progressive loss of muscle mass and consequent loss of strength. The condition is caused by genetic mutations that interfere with the production of muscle proteins necessary to build and maintain healthy muscles. The disease is genetic, and consequently, a history of muscular dystrophy in the family increases the chance of an individual developing the disease.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a term used to describe a set of neurological conditions that affect movement. It is the most common form of childhood disability. The condition makes it hard to move certain parts of the body.
